SOTER
A vision-based activity analysis system for ensuring safety and enhancing visitor experience of large-scale cultural and social events

SOTER is a multidisciplinary project aiming to transform the experience of visitors at music festivals and large gatherings. To do so, it is building technology for analysing the presence and movement of crowds and identifying behaviours of interest. These insights are leveraged by means of a gamified solution for visitors and can be used to improve safety. Notable examples include the presence and ambience detected at stages and waiting times in queues. The ambition of SOTER is to build technology that can be adapted to audiences at other large events.

Achieved Results
The SOTER project achieved its main objectives by implementing a crowd monitoring system that combined AI-driven analysis with gamification to improve visitor safety and experience at festivals. The consortium successfully developed and tested advanced algorithms for crowd counting and flow detection, delivering precise real-time insights for organisers. These capabilities were integrated into a microservices-based architecture and a gamified mobile app, which scored 83/100 in usability testing. Additionally, the project strengthened internationalisation through a learning expedition in Japan and enhanced partners’ skills in AI and digital tools, positioning the consortium to further scale and industrialise the solution
